On printed circuit boards, metal through holes are used only for electrical connections, not for mounting components. For economy and reliability, the number of holes should be kept to a minimum. When selecting one or both sides, it is important to consider the surface area of the part. The ratio relative to the total area of the printed circuit board is a reasonable and consistent ratio, which is very useful when installing components. Note that this usually refers to the area on one side of the panel.
When manufacturing a printed circuit board, a ratio between the pad diameter and the maximum line width is required.
